First of all, the amount of things I had to pack was ridiculous. Seriously, the entire back of my SUV was full and I had one very, very small bag with my things in it. The rest consisted of the girls' things--the pack n' play, bathtub, Bumbo seats, a few toys, etc. I think I had less to unload when I moved into my college dorm.
Joe stayed behind to get some things done around the house so I was on my own for the drive and a bit terrified. It's about a 3 1/2 hour drive from Greensboro to Burnsville--they had never been in their car seats for that long (or even close). I was pleasantly surprised that they slept most of the way and did not so much as make a peep during their brief periods of wakefulness. The weekend was off to a great start!
But then I realized that the downside to having babies on a schedule is, well, having babies on a schedule! The fact that they slept so long in the car completely threw off their nap schedule. My babies LOVE their schedule, and did NOT love being off it. They were CRANKY all weekend. Their crankiness was made more difficult that Attley did not want to be held by anyone but me.
That brings me to my next point... The ONLY downside of having our wonderful nanny, Nicole, is that the girls are used to being in the comfort of their own home 90% of the time and they are used to being held by precisely 3 people... me, Joe and Nicole. Attley has some serious stranger fright, poor baby. Avery is much more open to new faces, but was terrified of my mom (I think because she is on oxygen) and still preferred to be held by me. Fortunately, Avery and, to a certain extent, Attley, warmed up to my sister. And Avery LOVED Uncle Adon!
The girls always sleep in their cribs and have since they were two weeks old, so having to sleep in a pack n' play did NOT help the napping situation. I was terrified to see how the night would go. Fortunately, my sweet baby girls are the best night sleepers EVER and still slept 13 hours that night!
On Sunday, I fed the girls right before getting on the road to come home and loaded them in their car seats, at which point they decide to try out a new sport.... SYNCHRONIZED POOPING. Seriously, they have never pooped at the same time, but there they were, grunting and red faced at the same time. It necessitated taking them out of their car seats, changing them and then reloading them. Once we finally got on the road, the girls did great on the drive home and were thrilled when we arrived home and they got to see Joe--it was very cute to see their reaction after not seeing him for a couple of days.
Despite all the crankiness and realizing the downside of our scheduled babies who are used to being at home most of the time, I wouldn't change a thing. We are so lucky to be able to keep our girls on a schedule and in the comfort of our home and we are even luckier to have Nicole who adores our girls!
Even though the girls were cranky, it was still a great weekend and it was nice to see everyone. Here are some of my favorite photos from the weekend.
